The launch checklist: 10 things to do before your first sale

Opening your store is exciting. A little preparation makes sure your first visitors turn into your first customers. Work through this list and you'll be ready.
1. Write a clear welcome message
Your homepage banner is the first thing people read. Say what you sell and why it's different in one short sentence.
2. Add at least five products
A handful of products makes your store feel real. Give each one a clear title, a price and a description that answers the questions a customer would ask in person.
3. Use more than one photo per product
Show the product from the front, in use and up close. Customers can't touch your products, so photos do that job.
4. Set your shipping rates
Surprise shipping costs are the most common reason people leave at checkout. Keep rates simple and consider free shipping above an order amount.
5. Place a test order
Buy something from your own store in test mode. You'll see exactly what customers see, from cart to confirmation.
6. Create a launch discount
A small code such as WELCOME10 gives early visitors a reason to buy now.
7. Fill in your store details
Add a contact email and check your currency and country so customers know who they're buying from.
8. Check your store on a phone
Most visitors will arrive on mobile. Open your store on your phone and tap through every page.
9. Tell the people who already know you
Friends, family, past customers and followers are your first audience. Send them a personal note with a link.
10. Watch your first numbers
Your admin home shows visits, orders and sales. Check them daily in your first weeks to see what's working.
